Feb. 6 (UPI) -- More than 300 people attended a funeral in Israel Tuesday for a rabbi who was stabbed to death, as police ramped up their search for the killer.

Rabbi Itamar Ben Gal, 29, was stabbed to death Monday while standing near a bus stop.

Authorities are searching for the main suspect, identified as Abed al-Karim Adel Asi.

An Israeli officer witnessed the attack and hit Asi with his car, but the attacker was still able to flee to a waiting vehicle.

During the funeral Tuesday, mourners shouted, "His blood is on your hands" and "we want revenge."

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said Tuesday he was praying for Ben Gal's family.

"20 years ago, I gave an ambulance to Har Bracha hoping it would be used to deliver healthy babies. Instead, a man from Har Bracha was just murdered by a terrorist, leaving behind a wife and four children," he said in a tweet.

Friedman added that some Palestinian "leaders" have praised the accused killer.
