Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A 60-year-old man has died after he picked up an undetonated explosive device outside a metro station in Stockholm, Sweden.

The man was taken the hospital but his injuries proved fatal. A woman sustained minor injuries to her legs and face. She is being treated at a local hospital.

Citing Swedish newspapers, several reports suggest the explosive device was a hand grenade.

But police haven't confirmed the exact nature of the explosive device. Officials said bomb experts are investigating.

Originally investigated as a murder, police now do not believe the couple was targeted. Officials also ruled out terrorism.

"Someone has used some type of explosive material," Lars-Ake Stevelind, a rescue official, told Swedish television station SVT.

"I heard a huge bang," one local resident told Swedish paper Aftonbladet.

The explosion took place outside of the Varby gard station in Huddinge, a southern suburb of the Swedish capital.
