Cairo court sentences Morsi to 3 years in prison for speech

Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Cairo's Criminal Court on Saturday sentenced former President Mohamed Morsi to another three years in prison for insulting the judiciary.

He was one of 20 people to receive the sentence, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Voters elected Morsi president in 2012 as a member of the brotherhood. After one year in office, the political group was outlawed and he was deposed in a military coup in 2013.

After his ouster, Morsi was sentenced to life in prison for leaking national security information and documents to Qatar during his presidency.

The new sentence Saturday was for a speech Morsi made while in office "with the aim of spreading hate." In addition to the additional prison time, Morsi was ordered to pay a $56,270 fine.

Morsi was already serving a 20-year sentence for killing protesters during demonstrations in 2012.
