Police said after an autopsy it appeared the couple were strangled. Police sources initially said the deaths were regarded as "suspicious" but was likely a murder-suicide, CBC News reported.

Toronto police said its homicide division has taken over the investigation.

Authorities said there was no sign of forced entry to the home, and no suspects have been identified.

Barry Sherman was the billionaire founder of Apotex, a generic pharmaceutical firm. The couple owned a Toronto mansion, which was recently put up for sale with a $5.4 million price tag.
