Google celebrates the invention of the hole puncher with a new Doodle

Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Google is paying tribute to the hole puncher with a new Doodle.

Google's homepage features an animated sequence featuring a hole puncher hovering over a piece of paper and punching out two eyes and a happy face.

The piece of paper celebrates with a small dance. A number of identical holes punched out from construction paper are across the floor as part of the Google logo.

"Today we celebrate 131 years of the hole puncher, an understated -- but essential -- artifact of German engineering. As modern workplaces trek further into the digital frontier, this centuries-old tool remains largely, wonderfully, the same," Google wrote of the office item after describing how it feels to use one including the hearing of the "satisfying, dull 'click!'"

The hole puncher was invented by German entrepreneur Friedrich Soennecken who also invented the ring binder, CNET reported. A patent for the hole puncher was filed on Nov. 14, 1886.
