Kenyatta certified the winner of Kenya's election rerun

Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Incumbent Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner Monday of the country's controversial and largely unopposed re-election.

The Independent Elections and Borders Commission certified that Kenyatta received 98 percent of the Oct. 26 vote.

The results of the first election in August were nullified by the Supreme Court due to voting irregularities.

The major opposition candidate, Raila Odinga, withdrew from the race after the election rerun was ordered, saying the IEBC didn't make any meaningful changes to the system -- leaving Kenyatta the only main candidate on the ballot.

Odinga, who will address supporters Tuesday, may call for another election.

With Kenyatta's victory assured, focus turned to the 39 percent turnout for last week's vote -- which was down from 80 percent in August. Voting did not take place in four counties, all anti-Kenyatta strongholds, because of a fear of violence, election officials said.

Rock-throwing incidents were seen near many polling places, and at least three people died in confrontations with police.

At least 55 people died in election-related violence.

"Heavily armed police are using unlawful force against protesters and bystanders in the western city of Kisumu in what appears to be a deliberate campaign to punish inhabitants for continuing to protest amid chaotic elections over the past week," Advocacy group Amnesty International said Monday.
