Egyptian police killed in shootout with militants

By Danielle Haynes

Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Multiple Egyptian police officers died Friday in a shootout with militants in the country's Western desert, security officials said.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said the raid happened after security officials learned of a group of militants hiding in the Giza province near Cairo. Militants began firing at the officers as they approached the location.

The ministry said only that "a number" of officers died, though Voice of America reported the death toll was 14. Other unconfirmed reports put the death toll at nearly double that.

The militants allegedly were members of Hasm, a militant wing of the Muslim Brotherhood that has claimed responsibility for attacks over the past year in Egypt.

The ministry said militants also died in the shootout.
