Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Nigerian police said suspected militants kidnapped four people believed to be British missionaries in the country's southern Delta state.

Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka said officials believe militant group Karowei are behind the kidnapping, which took place Friday.

A local police chief told BBC News that the victims had been providing medical aid and preaching in Nigeria for up to 10 years.

"The abductors have not made any contact but we are doing our investigations to know the motive and have them rescued without jeopardising their lives," Aniamaka said.

Police Commissioner Zanna Ibrahim said authorities were hunting five suspects.

There has been a rise in such kidnappings in the oil-rich southern portion of the country, Scotland's The Herald reported.
