Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A knife-wielding assailant fatally stabbed two women before police killed him in what officials are treating as a terror attack Sunday at a train station in Marseille, France.
The attack took place at Saint-Charles station at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Gérard Collomb, France's interior minister, announced on Twitter that he was en route to the scene of the attack.
He said the attacker wasn't carrying any identification but he was known to have "several identities."
Authorities said they opened an investigation of "murders in connection with a terrorist enterprise" and "attempted murder against a person holding public authority." Officials warned travelers to stay clear of the station while they conduct the investigation.
Witnesses said the attacker yelled "Allahu Akbar" -- God is great, in Arabic -- as he carried out the attacks.
