Iran conducts successful test of Khorramshahr ballistic missile

Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Iran performed a successful test of a ballistic missile on Friday, hours after it was unveiled during a military parade.

Video footage from the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting showed the test at an undisclosed location from four angles and captured the moment the warhead of the missile was discharged.

The new Khorramshahr missile was unveiled by Iran's military earlier in the day during a parade in Tehran.

Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Division, said the missile is capable of carrying nuclear warheads more than 1,200 miles and "has become smaller in size and more tactical."

The missile can carry multiple warheads and its range would make it easily capable of reaching Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who was critical of U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of force against North Korea and denouncement of the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal between Iran and the U.S., said the country will "seek no one's permission to defend our land."

Rouhani added that Iran is fully committed to the nuclear deal, but "will promote our defensive and military power as much as we deem necessary."
