Max weakens to tropical storm over Mexico

Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The National Hurricane Center said Max weakened to a tropical storm after it made landfall in Mexico's Guerrero state Thursday.

In its 10 p.m. CDT advisory, the NHC said the center of Max was located 95 miles east of Acapulco. It was traveling east at 7 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

The government of Mexico discontinued all warnings west of Acapulco.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Acapulco to Laguna de Chacahua.

"On the forecast track, the center of Max will move farther inland over southern Mexico tonight and early Friday," the NHC said. "Additional rapid weakening is forecast, and Max is expected to weaken to a tropical depression later tonight and dissipate over southern Mexico early Friday."

Max is expected to produce rainfall accumulations between 5 inches and 10 inches with maximum totals up to 20 inches in the southern portion of Guerrero state.

"These torrential rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," the NHC said.
