Irma lashes Cuba before turning toward U.S.

Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Hurricane Irma battered the north of Cuba on Saturday before it began to turn north for its run up Florida's western coast.

Irma weakened to a Category 3 storm before it blew by Cuba, but it caused plenty of damage.

Uprooted trees, downed utility poles and some major structural damage were reported late Saturday. The Miami Herald reported that waves as high as 30 feet were expected near Havana.

Key islands north of Cuba and coastal areas saw floodwaters of five feet or more, CNN reported.

No injuries were reported on the island by Saturday night.

Irma started to turn north after slamming Cuba, and is now expected to track up Florida's western coast and get into Georgia before dissipating.
