Post-Tropical Cyclone Irma brings rain, could dissipate Tuesday

Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Irma weakened to a post-tropical cyclone early Tuesday morning but heavy rainfall was expected to continue in the southeastern United States, the National Hurricane Center said.

In its 5 a.m. advisory, the NHC said the eye of the storm was about 65 miles southwest of Atlanta and 100 miles east-southeast of Birmingham, Ala. Irma was moving north-northwest at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 15 mph.

There were flash flood watches in effect for portions of the southern Appalachians, and flood warnings and advisories throughout the southeast.

Irma was expected to weaken throughout the day as it moves through the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday.
