Death toll rises to 16 in Spanish attacks

Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A 51-year-old German woman became the 16th fatality in two terrorist attacks in Spain 10 days after the initial incident, officials said Sunday.

The unidentified woman died 10 days after being injured when a van plowed into pedestrians in Barcelona. Fourteen people died in the van incident and another two were killed in the driver's getaway and in a separate car and knife assault in Cambrils early the next day. The attacker, Younes Abouyaaqoub, was shot dead five days later by police west of Barcelona.

Hospitals still are treating treating 24 other people for injuries, including five in critical condition and three in serious condition, the Catalan health department said.

In Cambrils, five attackers climbed out of the overturned car and were shot dead by police.

Two other members of the 12-member cell were killed in an explosion before the van attack at a house apparently being used as a bomb factory in Alcanar, further down the coast from Cambrils.

Four other suspected terrorists appeared in court in Madrid last Tuesday.

On Saturday night, an estimated 500,000 people gathered in Barcelona to rally against terrorism.

Many held placards and banners reading, "I am not afraid."

The march was led by emergency workers, store keepers and residents of the city's Las Ramblas Boulevard.

Spanish King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended the protest.
