Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Elections officials declared Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta winner of this week's presidential election Friday, though his opponent refused to concede.

Kenyatta won his second term with 54.3 percent of the vote compared to 44.7 percent for his opponent, Raila Odinga, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said.

After the announcement of his win, Kenyatta said to supporters of the opposition: "I reach out to you ... we are all citizens of the same republic."

Earlier in the week, Odinga said Tuesday's election was manipulated to favor Kenyatta, prompting protests in the country. Odinga refused to concede defeat even after Friday's announcement. His party, the National Super Alliance, said the election results were announced before its allegations of fraud were resolved in court.

More protests erupted after the announcement of Kenyatta's win and police used tear gas to disperse crowds in some locations.

International observers have endorsed Kenyatta's win.
