British woman stabbed to death on Jerusalem tram

April 14 (UPI) -- Israeli police said a British woman in her 20s was stabbed to death on a tram near Jerusalem's Old City by a man who was recently released from a psychiatric hospital.

Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the victim was taken to a hospital, where she died. Police arrested a suspect, a 57-year-old Palestinian man, at the scene.

Officials said the woman was attacked while traveling on a tram in Tzahal Square, which was full of people celebrating Good Friday and Passover.

The tram made an abrupt stop after the attack. A 30-year-old pregnant woman and a 50-year-old man were also injured but was not yet clear whether it was from the stop or the knife attack.

Rosenfeld said the suspect is from Jerusalem's Rasel Amud neighborhood.

Britain's Foreign Office said the British government is in touch with local authorities about the attack.

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin said he was "filled with sadness about the attack," adding that his thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family.
