One arrested after high school shooting in Grasse, France

March 16 (UPI) -- French officials said they arrested one person in the southern town of Grasse on Thursday following a lunchtime shooting at the Tocqueville high school in which several were injured.

French National Police for the Alpes-Maritimes Department said one individual was arrested after an operation by the RAID elite law enforcement unit. French local media reported the person arrested was a heavily armed 17-year-old student.

The French Interior Ministry -- warning against rumors -- said eight people were injured, including those with shock. One of those injured in the shooting is the principal of the school. French officials said students are safe in the school, urging parents not to travel to schools to pick up their children amid an investigation.

The Interior Ministry issued a terror alert following the attack as a precaution, though no evidence has yet been revealed that the shooter is linked to any groups, officials said.

French Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Research Najat Vallaud-Belkacem will visit Tocqueville. The Education Ministry said a lockdown imposed on all schools in Grasse after the shooting has been lifted except for Tocqueville.
