Seven injured in ax attack at German train station

March 10 (UPI) -- Police said they apprehended a suspect in an ax attack in the Dusseldorf, Germany, train station that injured seven people, three seriously.

The train station closed after the attack Thursday evening, but reopened several hours later.

A single attacker, wielding an ax, was injured attempting to escape by jumping off a bridge in the city's main railway station. A police statement identified the suspect only as 36, male from the former Yugoslavia and now a resident of Wuppertal, about 20 miles from Dusseldorf; it added he "apparently has mental illness."

Authorities said the attacker did not appear to target victims but swung his weapon indiscriminately.

A motive was not given, but terrorism is not believed to be the cause of the incident. Although two other people were detained by police at the train station, it is believed the attacker acted alone, police spokesman Andreas Czogalla said.

"We were at the track waiting for the train. The train arrived, and suddenly someone jumped out with an ax and struck at the people. There was blood everywhere. I have never experienced anything like that." the German newspaper Bild quoted a witness as saying, NBC News reported.
