March 8 (UPI) -- Google released a new Doodle on Wednesday to celebrate International Women's Day.

The company honored U.S. suffragist Ida Wells, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, English mathematician Ada Lovelace and other women in the new Doodle slideshow.

"Although some of the women showcased in today's Doodle aren't household names, each made a mark in her own way," Google said. "They pursued a range of professions and passions and hailed from an array of backgrounds and countries.

"Part of the original spirit of International Women's Day [is] giving a voice to women who might not otherwise be heard," the company added. "It all started in 1908, when a group of women gathered in New York City to demand fair pair, better working conditions, and the right to vote. Their commitment to equality sparked similar events in other countries. In 1911, the first official International Women's Day rallies were held in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland."

The new Google Doodle was created over a two-month period by artist Olivia Huynh. She told The Washington Post she hopes the slideshow will inspire people to learn more about the women pictured.

"The chance to draw Frida for a Doodle is something to dream about," the artist gushed. "Her story is incredible ... [I hope the Doodle] inspires people to see women doing these things."

InternationalWomensDay.com said on its website that the day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The 2017 campaign theme is "#BeBoldForChange," which calls for a more gender-inclusive world.
