Meteor captured on video flying over Costa Rica's erupting Turrialba volcano

By Andrew V. Pestano

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Mother Nature displayed quite a show in Costa Rica this week when a video camera trained on Turrialba volcano captured an eruption as a meteor fireball flew overhead.

An astronomy official said the fireball was a disintegrating meteor, debunking some claims people in the area made about seeing a UFO.

Eric Sanchez, from the San José Planetarium of the University of Costa Rica, said the event was a meteor fireball disintegrating on impact with the atmosphere, Q Costa Rica reported. The fireball was captured on a camera belonging to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica, or OVSICORI, which was pointed at the volcano.

The incident occurred Tuesday at about 10:25 p.m., OVSICORI volcanologist Javier Pacheco said.

OVSICORI said the Turrialba volcano erupted on Friday but added that poor visibility prohibited a full assessment of the volcanic incident.
