World leaders congratulate Donald Trump on election victory

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- After Republican Donald J. Trump was announced as the United States president-elect, leaders worldwide sent congratulations.

In his congratulatory statement, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the stability of the Asia-Pacific region brings peace and prosperity to the United States -- calling Japan and the United States "unwavering allies."

"I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your election as the next president of the United States of America," Abe said in the statement. "As a very successful businessman with extraordinary talents, not only you made a great contribution to the growth of the U.S. economy, but now as a strong leader, you have demonstrated your determination to lead the United States."

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said her country -- which has an "enduring and special relationship" with the United States -- will remain a strong partner on trade, security and defense.

"I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the next president of the United States, following a hard-fought campaign," May said in her statement. "I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he wants to work with a Trump administration to "lift Russian-U.S. relations out of the current crisis, resolve issues on the international agenda, look for effective responses to global security challenges."

Putin said he is confident the countries can establish a "constructive dialogue based on the principles of equality, mutual respect and genuine consideration for each others' positions."

"This would be in the interests of both peoples and of the entire international community," a statement by the Kremlin reads. "Mr. Putin wished Mr Trump success in the high office and responsibility of head of state."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Trump.

"We look forward to working with you closely to take India-U.S. bilateral ties to a new height," Modi wrote on Twitter.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is confident he and Trump can "continue to strengthen the unique alliance between our two countries and bring it to ever greater heights."

"I congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the 45th president of the United States of America. President-elect Trump is a true friend of the state of Israel, and I look forward to working with him to advance security, stability and peace in our region," Netanyahu said in his statement. The ironclad bond between the United States and Israel is rooted in shared values, buttressed by shared interests and driven by a shared destiny."

Iranian leadership has called on the United States to stand by the 2015 nuclear agreement, which Trump has characterized as a "bad deal."

"The United States should fulfill its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action as a multilateral international agreement," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters.

"Congratulations President-elect Donald J. Trump," Ghana President John Dramani Mahama wrote on Twitter.
