BENGALURU, India, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Two stunt actors who confessed they weren't comfortable swimming were feared dead Monday after jumping from a helicopter into a lake during a chase sequence.
Stuntmen identified only as Anil and Uday were shooting a scene of the Kannada-language film Masthigudi about 15 1/2 miles from Bengaluru when the incident happened.
They never surfaced after dropping into Lake Tippagondanahalli. The film's lead actor, Duniya Vijay, jumped with them but he reportedly had on a life jacket.
Divers and rescuers searched for their bodies for several hours. The two men may have gotten stuck in silt in the backwaters, officials said.
They had confessed before the stunt they were nervous and didn't know how to swim.
"I know a little bit of swimming, but first time I'm jumping from a height," Anil told a reporter with Public TV "So that makes me a bit nervous. I have only swam in wells, where you can reach the edge with two or three strokes of your hand. But never swam 20 feet or 30 feet length.
"Same with me. I am not a good swimmer either," said Uday, who also said he had a fear of heights.
They were supposed to be picked up by a boat after they had jumped into the water.
Police sources say the filmmakers and crew may be charged with negligence because no rescue boats or life jackets were available.
Uday, besides being a body double, starred as a villain in Duniya Vijay film Jayammana Maga.
Anil acted in more than 25 films and was also shooting for Hebbuli and Bharjari.
