Another earthquake strikes central Italy, this time a 4.8-magnitude

PIEVE TORINA, Italy, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy on Thursday as the region still reels from destruction of persistent quakes and aftershocks since August.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at a depth of about 6 miles, was nearly 2 miles west-southwest of Italy's Pieve Torina town.

There are no reports of deaths or substantial damage. The earthquake was felt strongly in Italy's Marche region. Dozens of aftershocks followed the earthquake, including at least two 3.2-magnitude quakes.

Central Italy has faced dozens of earthquakes and aftershocks since the Aug. 24 quake near Amatrice that killed nearly 300 people and injured more than 350. A 4.9-magnitude tremor was measured on Tuesday about 5 miles east southeast of Pieve Torina. On Sunday, a 6.6-magnitude quake destroyed dozens of historic buildings.

More than 15,000 people have been housed in shelters by authorities due to tremors since the recent increase in tectonic activity.
