Uzbekistan helicopter crash kills 9, officials say

FERGANA, Uzbekistan, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Nine people were killed Tuesday when a military helicopter crashed in eastern Uzbekistan.

Ukbek officials said Wednesday that the Mi-171 chopper went down near Fergana. Three crew members died in the crash, as well as three members of the country's military. Three other victims also died.

"As a result of the accident three crew members and six members of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan on board were killed," the government-owned Uzreport news outlet reported, citing sources in the Defense Ministry.

"Leaders of Uzbekistan expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved families and relatives," the report said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Uzbekistan is a former Soviet state that borders Kazakhstan to the south and Afghanistan to the north.
