Palestinian man killed by Israeli soldiers after stabbing attack

HEBRON, West Bank, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old Palestinian man was shot and killed in the West Bank on Friday after he allegedly stabbed an Israeli soldier at the Gilbert military checkpoint, marking the latest in a wave of violence in the area.

The soldier was reportedly injured on his face and taken to a local hospital for treatment. A total of five people have been killed by Israeli forces in the past 24 hours.

"An assailant, armed with a knife, stabbed an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldier," a military representative said. "Responding to the threat, Israeli soldiers shot towards the assailant resulting in his death." Also on Friday, a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli forces and his girlfriend critically injured after they allegedly took part in a car ramming attack outside of Hebron's Old City that injured three Israeli civilians.

A Jordanian citizen was also shot and killed by Israeli military after allegedly stabbing people outside Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem.

At least 230 Palestinians and 34 Israelis have been killed in Israel and the West Bank since October 2015.
