BAARN, Netherlands, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A Dutch man was killed when his Tesla Model S crashed Wednesday morning in Baarn, Netherlands, it is not known if the Autopilot function was on, Dutch media reported. The car was going very fast when it crashed about 6am in a rural area. Tesla technical staff were called out to determine if the car's Autopilot feature was on, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported.

"Tesla is looking into the accident and will share the results with the public once the results are known," the electric car maker said in a statement.
The body of the 53-year-old unidentified driver could not be removed from the burning car until firefighters were certain electrocution was not a possibility.
Tesla has defended its Autopilot and various safety features following a series of crashed including a man in Florida who was killed when his Model S smashed into a truck, despite the autopilot being on.
"The data is unequivocal that Autopilot reduces driver workload and results in a statistically significant improvement in safety when compared to purely manual driving," the company has said in its blog.
