Typhoon Namtheun batters southern Japan, storm expected to weaken

KYUSHU, Japan, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Typhoon Namtheun brought rain and 100-mph winds to southern Japan, just days after another typhoon made landfall.

Namtheun is expected to track along the coast of Kyushu, Japan's southwestern-most island, eventually making landfall near Nagasaki.

Though the storm is expected to weaken, sustained winds of 100 mph are likely, with gusts reaching 125 MPH, making Namtheun as a Category 2 storm

Forecasters are also calling for close to eight inches of rain across the island, potentially doubling near the mountain peaks as the storm's forward speed is expected to slow leading to potential mudslides.

Typhoon Lionrock made landfall in northeastern Japan on Tuesday with high waves and heavy rains, At least 11 people have died as a result of the storm.
