MARACAY, Venezuela, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- At least five inmates were killed and 30 others were injured when two bombs were thrown into a Venezuelan prisoner care facility.

Venezuela's Public Ministry announced it deployed four prosecutors to investigate the "irregular situation" at the Alayón Center for the Care of the Detained in the north-central city of Maracay on Wednesday.

"In this regard, representatives of the institution will coordinate a series of actions and expertise to verify the health status of injured persons and to clarify the facts and determine the corresponding criminal responsibilities," the public ministry said in a statement, adding that a preliminary investigation found suspects threw two explosives into the yard of the prison center.

Investigators, including the public ministry's Scientific Technical Unit, are investigating the scene of the explosion as well as the hospital in which the injured are being treated.
