Turkish school bus crashes into canal, 14 killed

Six of the victims were children.

OSMANIYE , Turkey, June 6 (UPI) -- An intercity bus occupied by a school group ran off the road and into a canal in Osmaniye, Turkey, killing 14 people and injured 26 others.

The bus was carrying students, teachers and parents from a school outing to the Karatepe archeological site and national park when the accident occurred. Six of the fatalities were children.

State-owned Andalou News Agency said the cause remains unknown. Closed-circuit television shows the bus crossing the road in front of an oncoming car before it falls into the water.

Witnesses and local residents dived into the canal, attempting to save those trapped within the bus, before rescue team divers arrived.

The accident occurred on the Osmaniye-Kozan highway in southern Turkey, near the border with Syria.
