PARIS, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Former French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was named foreign minister Thursday in a government shakeup ahead of the 2017 presidential elections.

Ayrault, a Socialist Party veteran who was prime minister from 2012 to 2014, was appointed to replace former Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who resigned Wednesday.

President Francois Hollande also named French Greens Party head Emmanuelle Cosse as housing minister.

The reshuffling comes as Hollande attempts to gain broad support for his re-election bid in 2017.
