At least 3 U.S. contractors missing in Baghdad, likely kidnapped by militia

BAGHDAD, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Several American contractors went missing over the weekend in Iraq, possibly from an apartment in the capital.

The Americans, who reportedly work at Baghdad International Airport, appear to have been taken by Shiite militia in southern Baghdad, possibly from a building described as a brothel by a resident of the building. At least two of the contractors are Iraqi-Americans and one is a U.S. national.

The circumstances behind the kidnapping were unclear. Some media outlets reported they had gone missing two days ago along with their Iraqi interpreter. NBC reported they may have been taken from a vehicle.

The U.S. Department of State said it was aware of the missing Americans.

"We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals," State Department spokesman John Kirby said.
