JERUSALEM, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- An Israeli airstrike killed one person and wounded three others suspected of planning to attack Israeli forces with explosives Wednesday.

The strike on the border with Gaza was coordinated with the Israeli security agency Shin Bet, suggesting there was advance intelligence about the cell.

The Israel Defense Forces typically only conduct airstrikes in response to rocket fire at the border. Since the end of the 2014 50-day war in Gaza, Hamas, the Islamist group controlling Gaza, has largely honored the ceasefire, though some smaller militant groups have fired rockets and other ordnance into Israel.

"Forces guarding the border with Gaza face a growing threat from hostile terror groups attempting to destabilize the situation," said Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner.

Israeli troops and security forces have killed at least 20 Palestinians in clashes on the border in recent months.
