30 dead, 80 injured in three suicide bomb attacks in Chad

N'DJAMENA, Chad, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- At least 30 people were killed and more than 80 injured Saturday after three suicide bombers attacked an island in the Central African country of Chad.

The blasts on the island of Loulou Fou in Lake Chad were set off in several areas at a weekly market. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the region has been targeted by Boko Haram extremists.

Last month, Chadian lawmakers declared a state of emergency after attacks by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad area, which straddles Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger. Earlier this week, the State Department condemned a spate of suicide bombings in the region as "senseless acts of brutality."

"The United States continues to support the governments and people of the Lake Chad Basin region as they confront Boko Haram and the violence it inflicts," the State Department said. "We remain committed to this effort through a number of security and counterterrorism assistance programs, including providing advisors, intelligence, training, logistical support, and equipment to the governments of Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Benin to aid their fight against Boko Haram."
