5 things you didn't know about Canada's new PM Justin Trudeau

The Liberal Party's Justin Trudeau became Canada's prime minister-elect Monday in the most costly election in the nation's history.

Trudeau, 43, is the eldest son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau and is scheduled to be sworn in as The Right Honourable on Nov. 4. Here a few interesting facts about the Ottawa native.

1. He is the first child of a Canadian Prime Minister to also be elected for the position

Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, served as the PM of Canada for nearly 16 years. He became the 15th Prime Minister of Canada in April 1968 and served until June 1968 and resumed his role in March 1980 until June 1984. Pierre Trudeau died Sept. 28, 2000.

2. He participated in and won a boxing match on behalf of "Fight for the Cure"

In 2012, Trudeau beat Conservative Sen. Patrick Brazeau in the third round of the charity boxing match. The victory was considered an upset.

3. He is married to Canadian television host Sophie Grégoire

Trudeau and Grégoire met in 2003 at a Canadian Grand Prix event. They married on May 28, 2005, and have two children: Xavier James Trudeau, 8, and Ella-Grace Margaret, 5.

4. He began his campaign to run the Liberal Party on his late brother's birthday

Trudeau's younger brother Michel Trudeau died in an avalanche while skiing at British Columbia's Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park on November 13, 1998. He was 23. When Trudeau announced his intention to lead Canada's Liberal party on Oct. 2, 2012, he said he chose the date to honor his brother.

5. He is the second youngest person to be sworn in as prime minister of Canada

Charles Joseph "Joe" Clark, was appointed the16th Primer Minister of Canada on June 4, 1979 one day before his 40th birthday. Trudeau became the prime minister-designate of Canada at age 43.
