JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A pedestrian scaffolding bridge collapsed Wednesday in the Sandton district of Johannesburg, South Africa, killing at least two people.
A portion of the Great Walk Bridge scaffolding, used by cyclists and pedestrians, collapsed as Johannesburg was promoting the Ecomobility World Festival, an event encouraging people to walk, cycle and use public transportation.
Construction on the 3-mile bridge began in March by the Murray & Roberts company and was slated for completion in October 2016.
About 10,000 people walk or cycle daily between the Sandton district and the Alexandra township, areas which the bridge was designed to connect.
"The exact cause of the incident is not known at this time," Murray & Roberts said in a statement. All of our incident response procedures have been initiated, our support services have been mobilized and relevant authorities have been advised."
The company's share price fell at least 7 percent when news of the collapse broke.
