NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Kenyan police arrested three people suspected of attempting to bring an explosive device into a Nairobi shopping mail on Tuesday.
One suspect, whom Nairobi police spokesman Charles Owino said was carrying no identification papers, allegedly brought the handheld device into the Garden City Mall, one of the city's largest shopping centers.
The man was detained after he began acting suspiciously, the mall was quickly evacuated and the device was neutralized by the government's Explosive Ordnance Department after bomb-sniffing dogs confirmed the device was active.
Kenyan security forces have been on alert since a siege at another Nairobi mall in 2013 by al-Shabab militants killed 67 people. The terror group later initiated a series of high-profile attacks in Kenya, including an April assault on a university in northeastern Kenya in which 147 died.
