The apprehension took place in the al Bunouk neighborhood in the northeastern part of the capital. Black-clad gunmen driving four black SUVs blocked al-Faris' vehicle prior to taking the officials hostage.

No group has taken responsibility for the kidnapping.

The news comes after 18 Turkish workers were kidnapped Wednesday in Baghdad.

Iraqi forces investigating the abduction of the workers later raided the headquarters of an Iranian-backed Shi'ite militia but did not find the missing.
