ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Russia expelled Ukrainian diplomat Ihor Fedikevych, who worked for the Consulate in St. Petersburg in a response to a similar move made by Ukrainian authorities in July. "You remember that our diplomat was expelled from Odessa. We are taking symmetrical measures," a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

On July 13, Valery Shibeko, the acting Russian consul in Odessa, was expelled from Ukraine.
"The decision was made due to his activities being incompatible with a diplomatic one, as well as a violation of the provisions of the Vienna Convention," said Ukrainian Security Service chief Vasyl Hrytsak, according to Interfax.
The Russian Foreign Ministry determined then the action was a move to exacerbate tensions. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said at the time that Russia will take "the necessary counter-measures, as is customary in diplomatic practice."
On Tuesday, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax, "We confirm the expulsion of the Ukrainian diplomat as a counter-measure. Consul Ihor Fedikevich, who worked for the Ukrainian Consulate in St. Petersburg, was expelled from Russia on Aug.25."
