DOUMA, Syria, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- At least 80 people were killed Sunday in airstrikes carried out by the Syrian government in the rebel-held city of Douma, about seven miles away from Damascus, the country's capital.
The airstrike targeted a marketplace, which was destroyed in the attack. Surrounding buildings were also reportedly destroyed and vehicles were set ablaze. About 200 people were injured in the attack.
The city of Douma is targeted repeatedly by government airstrikes as President Bashar al-Assad is attempting to stop rebels from firing rockets from there into the capital. Both al-Assad's government and the rebels, including the Jaysh al-Islam militant Islamist group, are accused by aid organizations of war crimes because of the indiscriminate nature of their attacks, as civilians are often killed.
