SKOPJE, Macedonia, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Macedonia's Interior Ministry has launched a multi-city operation to arrest alleged members of the Islamic State. Nine people were arrested Thursday morning.
Macedonian authorities are looking for individuals who allegedly participated in paramilitary formations in Syria and other regions where armed conflict is taking place. Additionally, some of the individuals have recruited Macedonian nationals to take part in the Syrian conflict. The operation is being carried out by Macedonian police and is taking place in the cities of Skopje, Struga, Kumanovo, Gostivar and others.
Twenty-seven additional suspected militants have yet to be arrested.
The nine individuals arrested were taken to Skopje's criminal court for interrogation. The search for the additional militants will continue.
