LA PAZ, Bolivia, July 17 (UPI) -- The president of Bolivia's soccer federation was arrested Friday -- the latest in a series of sweeping international corruption probes that saw seven global soccer officials arrested two months ago, authorities said.
Carlos Chavez, Bolivia's soccer federation chief and treasurer of the South American Football Confederation, is accused of participating in "alleged corruption in the management of resources," BBC News reported Friday.
The Secretary General of the Bolivian federation, Alberto Lozada, was also arrested for allegedly fixing matches.
Friday's arrests follow a massive global investigation into corruption that saw police arrest seven FIFA executives at a Swiss hotel in May. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, soccer's global governing body, is headquartered in Switzerland.
In response, Bolivia's football federation launched its own investigation that ultimately led to Chavez's arrest. BBC News reported more than 20 Bolivian soccer officials have given evidence of corruption to courts so far.
The U.S. Department of Justice was involved in the May arrests and has charged 14 current and former FIFA officials and associates on charges of "rampant, systemic and deep-rooted" corruption.
Thursday, the Swiss Justice Ministry said one of the seven arrested in May has been extradited to the United States to face corruption charges. The other six remain in Switzerland and refuse to be extradited, Sports Illustrated reported.
Multiple other Bolivian soccer officials remain under investigation and further arrests are possible, officials reportedly said.
