U.N. resolution on Iran deal presented by U.S.

UNITED NATIONS, July 16 (UPI) -- The United States has distributed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution to implement the agreement with Iran on its nuclear program.

The resolution was submitted Wednesday on behalf of the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, France, Germany and the European Union, each a participant in the talks with Iran. It calls for any permanent Security Council member to use its veto power if Iran is observed violating the deal. It was negotiated by the five permanent members, who were each present at the talks in Vienna, and is expected to pass within days.

The outline of the resolution is part of the 159-page document to which Iran agreed.

The resolution will go into effect 90 days after the "joint comprehensive plan of action" is implemented, so the U.S. Congress, which must approve the deal, has an opportunity to review it. Any country involved in the agreement could bring an allegation of violations to a new dispute-resolution procedure, or a country could ask the Security Council for a vote on Iranian sanctions relief, a key part of the agreement.

Vitaly Churkin, Russia's U.N. ambassador, said, "This is one of the most complicated, imaginative and interesting draft resolutions the Security Council has ever considered."
