GEDO REGION, Somalia, July 16 (UPI) -- A Kenyan military convoy was hit by an explosion near the Somalia-Kenya border Wednesday.

As the convoy neared the border in the Gedo region of Somalia, military personnel on board hit a road side mine planted by unknown individuals and bore several casualties and injuries. Kenyan helicopters arrived to transport the injured to medical assistance.

Information regarding the death toll remains unclear.

A police officer said that three people have died so far and 10 others were injured.

Though no one has claimed responsibility for the incident, Somali-based militant group al-shabab has in the past used landmines to attack Kenyan soldiers. These soldiers have been in conflict with al-shabab militants in the Gedo region in response to cross-border raids and offensives that have taken place.
