You're fired!: Univision cuts ties with Donald Trump for calling Mexicans rapists

WASHINGTON, June 25 (UPI) -- Univision, leader in Spanish-language television programming, announced Thursday it will cut ties with Donald Trump for his remarks labeling Mexicans as drug dealers and rapists.

The television channel, founded in Los Angeles, will no longer air the Miss USA pageant, which is partially owned by Trump, or work with any other projects tied with Trump.

The pageant is scheduled for July 12.

Univision released a statement:

"Univision... is ending the company's business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J. Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants," Univision announced. "At Univision we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country."

The move comes as a reaction to Trump's recent presidential announcement speech, where he made remarks about Mexicans that generated worldwide condemnation.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best... they're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems. They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting," Trump, 69, said.

Many in Mexico did not agree with Trump's claims.

Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jose Antonio Meade said the comments showed "profound ignorance."

Mexican Secretary of the Interior Miguel Angel Osorio called Trump's comments "biased and absurd" and said Trump ignored the fact that the United States was built by the hard work of immigrants worldwide.

Trump took to Twitter to react about the Univision development.

"Mexican gov doesn't want me talking about terrible border situation & horrible trade deals. Forcing Univision to get me to stop- no way!" Trump wrote.

He said Univision wants to back out of their contract to air the Miss USA pageant because he exposed "the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.

"I love Mexico but not the unfair trade deals that the US so stupidly makes with them. Really bad for US jobs, only good for Mexico," Trump added.
