14 watercolors, paintings by Adolf Hitler sell for $450K at auction

WASHINGTON, June 23 (UPI) -- A collection of 14 paintings, drawings and original watercolors signed A. Hitler were sold for a total $450,000 at an auction in Nuremberg, Germany this week.

A Chinese buyer bought the most expensive work of the collection -- A painting of King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle -- for $111,582. Artnet reports that most of the buyers, although unnamed, come from all over the world, including Brazil, United Arab Emirates, France and Germany. The auction's organizer, Kathrin Weidler told the German DPA news agency that "These collectors do not specialize in this painter, but have a general interest in high-value art."

Other works purportedly by the Nazi dictator included a still life of carnations (sold for over $81,000) and a sketch of a nude female. They are expected to have been created between the years 1904 and 1922, the Guardian reports.

There is no law against the selling of Hitler's art in Germany, as long as it does not contain any Nazi symbolism. A watercolor that was meant to be auctioned off at Nate D. Sanders Fine Autographs and Memorabilia Los Angeles in May was pulled from the list for unknown reasons just days before the event.

Hitler had originally wanted to be an artist before entering politics, but his desire was never met. He is believed to have produced a hefty collection of artwork as a young man.
