Reuters Bureau Chief Maria Golovnina dies in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Maria Golovnina, Reuters' bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan, died after losing consciousness at her office in Islamabad.

Medical teams rushed Golovnina to Kulsum International Hospital where she was declared dead. Her body has been transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science.

No cause of death has been announced and an autopsy has not been conducted yet.

Golovnina, 34, joined Reuters in 2001 as a foreign correspondent before serving as the bureau chief since 2013.

"Maria was a superb journalist with a long and varied career at Reuters," the news agency said in a statement released Monday. "Her talents, energy and can-do spirit will be sorely missed."

Golovnina was a Russian national who also spoke fluent Japanese.
