CAIRO, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The two sons of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak were released from jail on Monday pending a retrial.
Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, 53 and 51 respectively, await retrial along with their father for embezzlement charges. The sons were set free a week after a court ruled they have served the maximum pre-trial detention duration.
The release of the son's comes a day after at least a dozen people were killed in clashes between police and protesters on the fourth anniversary of Egypt's revolution, part of the Arab Spring.
On Jan. 13, an appeals court overturned the 2014 embezzlement conviction of Hosni Mubarak and his sons. They and four other defendants were charged of embezzling $17.9 million.

Hosni Mubarak, 86, and his sons were detained in 2011 and charged with corruption, insider trading and embezzlement. Mubarak was convicted of issuing orders to kill peaceful protesters in 2011, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.
Mubarak ruled as president for 29 years.
