ROME, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Pope Francis' travel itinerary in 2015 may include visits to New York and Washington, a senior Vatican official said Tuesday.

The Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, responded to speculation by confirming to the Catholic News Agency: "I think the pope will go to United Nations. Everybody is speaking about that ... but no official announcement has been delivered."

If the pope does visit New York, Parolin added that "of course," Pope Francis would also try to visit Washington, D.C.

Those stopovers would likely be an extension of a confirmed papal visit to Philadelphia in September for the World Meeting of Families, which is scheduled Sept. 22-27.

"Maybe the three cities together, no?" Pope Francis said in August regarding invitations he had received to visit Philadelphia, New York and Washington.
