LAHORE, Pakistan, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A fire Monday at a four-story manufacturing and retail building in Lahore, Pakistan has killed at least 13 people leaving many others injured.
The fire at the Anakali Bazaar, a building in which items including lighters, sunglasses and electronic devices are made and sold, was likely caused by an electrical short circuit.
The Pakistani television channel Samaa reported the majority of the casualties were first-floor shopkeepers, and the city government's district coordination officer said, "Most of the people died as a result of suffocation and not from the blaze itself," adding it took only "four or five minutes" for the fire to envelop the building.
The Lahore fire came two days after a similar incident at the Karachi, Pakistan, Timber Market, in which three multi-story buildings, stocked with wood, burned. Surrounding residential neighborhoods also caught fire, but no deaths were reported.
