JERUSALEM, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A Palestinian man was killed Tuesday by Israeli troops in the West Bank after he allegedly threw a bomb at the soldiers, the Israeli Defense Force said.

Soldiers making an arrest in the Qalandiyah refugee camp were fired on by gunmen. When one threw a makeshift bomb at them, the soldiers fired back and killed him, the IDF said. Palestinian medical officials said Mahmoud Abdullah Adwan, 21, was standing on the roof of his home when he was shot, and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Palestinian sources said no shots were fired at the soldiers.

Witnesses said camp residents only threw stones at the soldiers, and that Adwan, on the roof, was only a bystander. At least 47 Palestinians have been killed in the west Bank by Israeli forces in 2014, the United Nations notes.

"Special forces came under attack in overnight operation in Qalandiya," Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said. "In the exchange one terrorist was killed and another wounded and detained." The IDF later announced it was "investigating the incident."
